Local artist/marine scientist Ethan Estess will exhibit a new series of print works at his studio/gallery on the Westside of Santa Cruz on the First Friday of April 2017. This series, titled Tide Lines, will explore the artist’s adaptation of a Japanese printmaking technique called gyotaku, which is traditionally used to capture the detail of fish skin. Here, Estess expands upon this method to include a variety of subjects such as reclaimed fishing rope, plastic grocery bags, and scavenged seaweed. Collectively, these works are a meditation on biodegradation and the transience of physical material between the land and sea in the age of convenience plastics.
