Artist’s Statement

My name is Christopher Allen, and I came to Santa Cruz in 1996 to attend UCSC. I have worked as an educator in some capacity for the last 15 years, and as a recycled materials artist for the last three years. I was first drawn to art by several things: the sudden loss of a full time job, an insatiable desire to work with my hands, and an abundance of available materials.

I have always loved the idea of re-purposing things generally considered to be trash, of taking everyday objects and using them in different, creative ways. I work primarily with recycled bottles, salvaged plywood, fence wood, driftwood, barnwood, architectural salvage, wire, scrap metal, spray paint, and other found materials. I like playing with juxtaposition between natural and man-made materials, between concrete and abstract representations of objects and ideas, and the effects of light, shadow, and texture. I also occasionally use the context of my found materials to create social and political commentary. I like incorporating elements of pop-culture, literature, music, and poetry.

I also work closely with a number of local businesses and other artists for inspiration and materials, including Ventana Surfboards and Supplies, Bicycle Trip, and Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

I am constantly inspired by the world around me. I hope you enjoy the show. Remember: Art is Everywhere!
