Artist: Kim Ferrell

Kim Ferrell received her degree in Graphic Design from Cal Poly, SLO and made a career in branding and packaging design working for local companies and design agencies. However, as technology took over the design field she found herself retreating to traditional drawing and painting to refuel and reconnect with her original passion for creating art. Inspired by the classical figurative work of the old masters after visiting the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C. she began looking for opportunities to study classical realism. Not long after, she found an historical figure painting class taught by Noah Buchanan at Cabrillo College. This course set Ferrell off on a new path as an oil painter. She continues her fine art training through the atelier method, which focuses on classical drawing and painting skills, by attending life drawing sessions, artists workshops, and on-line courses.

Ferrell was among the first generation of women to benefit from the implementation of Title IX, leading her to a lifetime of fitness. Among her many sports, she has been a competitive swimmer, runner, and triathlete. The only brief interruptions in her active life have been the births of her two daughters who became her first models. From these first sessions with her own daughters, it became clear that there were few representations of today’s active women as the subject of contemporary figurative work in the fine art world. With this realization, Ferrell saw an opportunity to apply her unique combination of personal experience and professional skills into artistic expression.

Ferrell is currently represented by Xanadu Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona. Her paintings have been selected for the juried Annual Salon Show at Santa Clara’s Triton Museum. This year’s entry; “Faithful”, celebrating the bond between Maggie and her border collie, Kody; received third place in the category of oil paintings. She continues her fine art training through workshops and coursework that focus on the academic traditions of Classical Realism.
