My drawing and painting practice is guided by a search for small surprises that speak to formal issues as well as to an existential situation that is at once uncertain, temporary and unknowable.

The recent 16” x 20” paintings stand in response to a longtime drawing discipline in which the accumulation of obsessive linear marks is foundational. In contrast to the drawings, the paintings are neither labor intensive nor insistent. They begin as a two or three colored collage in which the forms are coaxed to suggest an ambivalent perceptual space. The linear element is often incorporated as a playful afterthought.

The two bodies of work complement one another through their oppositional approaches toward evoking emptiness, wonder and a kind of quiet, limp, doom.

In both series, I have chosen to work with readily available and cheap materials because I am fond of them. I am also fond of the office and craft store associations as well as the challenge to take those associations somewhere else.

Josh lives and works in Santa Cruz, California. He obtained his BA degree from the University of Santa Cruz in 1991 and studied at the San Francisco Art Institute in 2001. His work has been exhibited in San Francisco, Chicago and New York City.
