Ann Baldwin May,Quilt Artist Artist's Statement https://annbaldwinmayartquilts.com
Fabric has been a major part of my life for a long time. The path from making and designing clothes, to the fabrication of quilts and on to art quilts seems the most natural progression for me. Art quilts free me to choose a wide array of colors, textiles and fabrics. I like the mixture of fabric and texture to draw the eye in several directions. Whimsical additions are always a possibility. Many of the materials are redirected from the San Francisco Design Center.
Color and texture is where my projects start. My motivation comes from how the materials play together. The technique of layering of fabrics allows me to create a greater sense of depth and dimension. I choose to create an impressionistic view rather than a realistic one. I enjoy the serendipitous use of found objects, often giving them a new and unintended use.
My encore career as an art quilter began June,2012 after 38 years in the public school system as a bilingual teacher and Bilingual Resource Specialist in Watsonville. I began sewing in junior high, and took two years of sewing as an elective in high school in Palo Alto. I received all of my education at UC,Irvine; BA,History, Elementary Teaching Credential and MAT, Spanish. My participation in Los Méxicas, the UCSC Ballet Folklórico Group deepened my understanding and appreciation for Mexican culture.
