Katrina King, master metal artist, is best known for her use of color on metal. Through non-traditional techniques, which she has adapted from uniquely developed methods, her provocative landscapes invite the viewer to escape into other-worldly mystical landscapes and earthly silhouettes not traditionally seen on metal. The challenge to simulate antiquity in newly made objects comes from her intrigue towards the faded colors and surfaces of old artifacts and crumbling structures and the stories they tell of another lifetime. Assemblages of raw steel, paints and patinas are layered using varying forms of resists, hand-cut stencils and welded connections to create expressive and ethereal wall hangings.
Born in upstate New York, Katrina started her collegiate education in the interior arts, her attraction to the wild west and hand-made objects brought her to Oregon to continue in her studies in metalsmithing and jewelry design at OCAC. Since then, she has resided in Northern California. Katrina and her partner, now parents to a toddler, own their business, where together in their Santa Cruz Studio they design and fabricate concrete and metal furnishings, commissioned architectural elements and also feature Katrina's gorgeous metal wall art.
