First Friday with Karen Potter, fine art painter at Miritz & Bailey hosted by Caitlin Phillips

September 5 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Stop by for a sip and stroll! Submerge yourself into the luminous world of Karen Goudge Potter, where color, memory, and landscape converge on canvas. This exhibition brings together her vibrant California landscapes, alive with rolling golden hills, fleeting coastal light, and the shifting moods of the sea. Her self-portraits, both playful and contemplative, unfold like diary entries—layered with poetry, sketches, and emotion—revealing an intimate journey of self-reflection. Alongside these, her abstract works emerge as “painting poems,” lyrical explorations of color, shape, and composition that invite the viewer into a more meditative space.
Potter’s paintings pulse with dense, saturated hues and atmospheric depth, celebrating both the external beauty of place and the inner landscapes of thought and feeling.

This event is not only a chance to see her art but to experience her world—a dialogue between light, land, and the human spirit.

A First Friday favorite event in Midtown, Caitlin hosts artists at her real estate office. The art is displayed for two months minimum and the artist benefits 100% from the profits of any painting sold. Come support local art and stop by! Always a friendly and fun venue we hope to see you there!

Artist statement:
Landscapes and Innerscapes

Many times, I have told myself to choose between landscape painting and my personal painting (I call them ‘selfies’ or ‘innerscapes’) but I can’t; they are both important to me and, over time, I am seeing how they overlap, how the colors, the lights, the beauty of the California landscapes, find their way into my ‘selfies’ and the personal responses of my ‘innerscapes’ are finding their way into my landscapes.

As a native Californian (second generation) and the daughter of an artist (and a house filled with 6 children and buckets of crayons), landscape painting was an easy fit. I was catapulted into it as a student at UCSC living at student housing where beautiful views surrounded me as I stepped out my door. I also had the privilege of participating in the Outdoor Painter’s Project with Terry St. John for a few summers. Since then, I have participated in many local shows and events (Open Studios, Capitola Plein Air Event, California Juried Landscape Shows, etc.).

As for my Innerscapes, I have always kept journals, especially when, raising (and homeschooling) my 4 children, I didn’t have time (or space) to paint. It only took a few minutes to do a quick self-portrait doodle showing ‘me’ that day (often a tangled, frantic me) along with a poetry sketch and a short journal entry. Eventually, I decided to take a few of these and develop them into paintings. They surprise me with the new directions the paintings take.
