“Lungs of the Sea Forest” is an immersive experience featuring a site-specific installation and two films at Radius Gallery. The exhibition lives at the intersection of art, science, and activism. It will run April 17 – May 12 and feature an Art + Science Talk with environmental panel discussions on May 5.

Artist Kalie Granier transformed the gallery space into a colossal kelp nest, inviting the audience to immerse themselves. The installation is a compilation of bull kelp gathered over three years from diverse beaches throughout Santa Cruz and Monterey counties. Each strand of kelp has been thoughtfully reinforced at its most delicate points and will be suspended from the historic beams at the Tannery Arts Center.

These underwater marvels play a crucial role in sequestering carbon, releasing oxygen, and contributing to cleaner water and air. “Lungs of the Sea Forest” serves as a poignant call to attention regarding the precarious state of kelp ecosystems in the face of climate change.

About the Artist:
Kalie Granier is a French interdisciplinary artist currently residing in Santa Cruz, California and is recognized for her profound exploration of the interconnectedness between humans and the environment. Grounded in ecofeminist values, her artistic practice delves beneath the surface to reveal the intricate relationships between humanity and non-human entities in this new geological era. Kalie has a Master of Arts from the ESAG, Penninghen School of Visual Art in Paris, exhibits internationally, and has participated in residencies and forums worldwide. Drawing inspiration from emotions as her guiding compass, she embarks on a journey toward collective consciousness and regenerative togetherness,with the ultimate aim of inspiring positive change.

Radius Gallery is located at the Tannery Arts Center.
