Artist Statement
My creative journey has been happening for several years, culminating in a developing practice of creating abstract art, informed by my fascination with hue and tone.
It feels as if my life has been leading me to this practice. As a native of London, yet raised for some of my childhood years in the British countryside, I have been inspired by urban landscapes with their grit and grime and layer upon layer of human-applied visual history, as well as more serene pastoral vistas.
A year-long sabbatical in my late 20’s found me traveling on a shoe string, marveling at the rich, vibrant and complex cultures of India, Indonesia, Japan, and Nepal, and storing up intense and diverse visual memories. And always, wherever I roam, you will find me immersed in the local art museum, gallery or installation. On a recent trip to Washington DC, I managed 12 museums in less than 4 days.
Now in California, we are blessed (for the most part!) with wonderful natural light. This works to highlight the multi-varied colors of nature and man-made structures. It is difficult to resist delighting in the iridescent ruby-red of an Anna Hummingbirds chest feathers, the ice-cream color facades of row houses in San Francisco, the glinting blue-teal-blush pink of an abalone shell washed up onto the beach after a storm.
This ongoing love of color and texture and tone and light and shadow has become a constant source of joy and inspiration. And it is this joy which is finding its’ expression in my work.
