First is our June First Friday featuring the art of Them Gilbert.  Thom's work explores gender, and gender non-conformity through form and color. Using a comic/illustrative style, he tries and convey the personal nature of the work, as well as the ridiculousness of gender itself. He studies philosophy, and take inspiration from the academic work that he does. Learning to love the process of critical thinking has allowed him to closely interview aspects of his life and turn them into art. Although usually the process goes in the opposite direction. He makes the art, and then employs his cognitive skills in order to parse out what he was feeling at the moment of creation. In this way art is less work and more therapy. He wants to create life by using loud colors and messy shapes in order to celebrate the outrageous beauty of gender nonconformity, which is so far outside the bounds of traditional sensibilities that he can allow himself to love his work no matter how “good” or “bad” it may be. He believes that creating with the intent to heal is a critical part of extricating ourselves from traditionally oppressive structures, and he hopes that he can encourage at least one person to pick up art for their own sake.
