Michaelangelo Gallery (www.michaelangelogallery.net) is located near the banks of the San Lorenzo River, originally part of the historic Salz Tannery in the original hide barn. The gallery was established in 1990.
The goal of Michaelangelo Gallery is to showcase artists' work providing a venue for artists to sell their art. Monthly exhibits display the talents of painters, watercolorists, fiber artists and others in a well lit and intimate environment.
Related to this goal, Michaelangel Gallery cultivates community and region artists as teachers to share their processes and skills and encourage the creativity of others. A classroom within the Gallery provides workshop space on a reservation basis at an affordable price.
FashionART Santa Cruz (fasionartsantacruz.com) is a project begun by Angelo Grova. The annual FashionART show invites artists and designers to walk the runway strutting their creations and raising funds for the Santa Cruz Art Education Program.
The gallery and studio building, originally built in 1856, still maintains an old farm-house charm though presently it includes artist live-work studios, surrounding art studios, storage spaces and a 5000 square-foot gallery space. Angelo Grova, owner of Michaelangelo Gallery, built this space conscientiously maintaining the barn-like architecture and style characteristic of the old Tannery. Angelo built one of the first artist live-work studio spaces not only in Santa Cruz, but in the state of California.
Once part of the Salz Leather Tannery, the foundation and structure of Michaelangelo Gallery and Studios was used for leather production. Saltz Leather Tannery was once the oldest and largest leather factory west of the Mississippi. Where art now hangs in the main gallery, animal hides once dangled from the beams. The nearby San Lorenzo River was used to transport the Santa Cruz made leather and ammunition to the ocean.
