Beth Purcell: Take a Walk on the Wild Side
I am a self-taught Mosaic Artist with 25 years of experience. I hand-cut each small piece from ceramic tiles, dishes, antique china, and various bits and pieces. Collecting the material is an integral part of my process.
At heart I am a collector, hunter, and gatherer, and truly enjoy this aspect of my art. My neighbors often leave beautiful broken china along my fence or I’ll find a carefully wrapped chipped teapot on my front porch.
I dream of earthquakes. My inspiration comes from a variety of sources: tribal rugs, valentine cards, children’s books, quilts, my dreams, my travels, and folk art. I have created pieces both large and small, for personal enjoyment and larger public installations, from Mexico to England. Creating something from the broken and discarded has brought me immense peace and pleasure. I hope you feel that as you experience these pieces. I welcome inquiries about custom pieces and installations.
Explore some of my larger local public installations at New Brighton Middle School, Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History, Santa Cruz Waldorf School, Aptos Public Library, and Bayview Elementary School.
