First Friday Santa Cruz

Totally Artrageous

Totally Artrageous

by Bree Karpavage

Colorful and illustrative, the newest addition to the Capitola Mall, Artrageous, features the collective flavor of eight local Santa Cruz street artists. Brands like Jimbo Phillips, Made Fresh Crew, Rugged Coast and Lemon Tree have taken over this 1000+ square foot space with locally designed apparel, jewelry, gifts and artwork, complete with a massive sticker collection and Pac Man arcade game.

Beautifully designed and organized by brand, the selection of wearable art is impressive, but art is everywhere in this store, not just on t-shirts. Every pillar, case and stand has been plastered with graphics. “Waves of Steel,” a surfing skeleton sculpture by metal artist Jim Herbert greets you as you walk in and 2D artwork hangs in every nook of wall space.

Joe Fenton brings his unique collection of 2D work to the space, selling original works and art prints. A mixed media artist incorporating his love of westcoast style street art with the ancient geometric artform of tangrams, Joe uses laser etched wood, various painting techniques and digital art to create his pieces.

This mixture of artwork and apparel creates a gallery style, shoppable space with something for everyone who loves the edgy look of classic Santa Cruz surf/skate art. And if eight flavors isn’t enough to choose from, visit the “Local Friends” section where you can find even more artist’s designs represented on consignment. The community collaboration and comradery here is totally Artrageous.

Swing by their Grand Opening event on Friday, August 25 from 5-9pm – meet the artists and buy some gear. And keep a look out for more events this fall with art demos and guest artists.
